Moving truck snaps sign, runs onto plaza in New London

New London police investigate after a moving truck struck a street sign and lamppost and became stuck on Water Street in front of Union Station on Tuesday, July 17, 2018. The Allied moving company tractor-trailer failed to negotiate the turn from Bank Street to Water Street, blocking both traffic lanes in front of the train station and forcing traffic to use taxi stand lanes to get around. New London — An Allied moving truck failed to negotiate a turn near Parade Plaza on Tuesday morning, snapping a sign, popping its back tires and coming to a rest against a lamppost.

Police were taking photos of the wreck, which quickly caused traffic to back up onto Bank and State streets.

Cars were using the taxi stand lane in front of Union Station to bypass the crash but police eventually closed the street to remove the truck. It was gone by 11:30 a.m.

Police charged the driver, 46-year-old Sammy Hernandez of 129 Pequot Ave., with failure to maintain lane.

    No injuries were reported.
