Ledyard police investigate report of man trying to lure children into car

Ledyard — Police are investigating a report that a man on Saturday tried to lure two children into a car.

The children, aged 8 and 9, told police that a man in a gray or silver Honda sedan asked them Saturday morning if they wanted a ride as they walked on Meeting House Lane, Chief John Rich said Monday. The children said the man — described as having dark skin, salt-and-pepper hair and wearing a black jacket — then "told them to get in the car," Rich said.

The children ran away to one of their homes and reported the incident to an adult, "exactly what you'd hope they would do under the circumstances," Rich said. Police received the report at about 9:45 a.m. Saturday, and immediately canvassed the neighborhood, Rich said.

Rich said an internal bulletin calls for an additional patrol check in the area. Police also notified area school officials and nearby police departments. Rich said he was unaware of any similar incidents in Ledyard in the recent past.

"We're looking to see if we can identify the person and see if there was ill intent in the interaction," Rich said of the incident, which he noted had been circulating on Facebook the last two days. "It's under active investigation and we're stepping up our presence in the area."
