    UPDATED: Spectators injured in Waterford Speedbowl crash

    Waterford — Three spectators were injured by debris Sunday night and taken to the hospital when a race car crashed into a safety fence at the Waterford Speedbowl.

    The incident occured at 7:45 p.m. with initial reports of a multi-car crash on the track with drivers needing extrication. Videos of the incident reveal the car sliding against the fence after it left a turn and proceeded down the straightaway as spectators tried to protect themselves. 

    A Facebook video captured the incident. The crash damaged a large section of the fence.

    Police Chief Brett Mahoney said Sunday night that the injuries did not appear to be severe when the victims were taken to the hospital. 

    "We happy to report everyone involved in tonight's incident is okay thanks to the Cohanzie Fire Department and EMTs for their help," the Speebowl stated in a Facebook post at 9 p.m.

    Speedbowl officials declined further comment at the track Sunday night.
