Ledyard man charged in Preston bank robbery, police chase

A Ledyard man is facing charges after a bank robbery in Preston and brief police chase Friday in Norwich.

State police at Troop E in Montville were alerted by an alarm about 3:40 p.m. at the Jewett City Savings Bank at 353 Route 165, Preston, according to an arrest report. A bank employee then called 911 to report that the bank had been robbed.

The employee said a man displayed a note demanding money but did not display a weapon, police said. The employee was able to provide police with a description of the man and the vehicle he was driving. The description was broadcast to area police departments.

Norwich police then contacted state police to report that a vehicle matching the description was spotted in their city. City and state police attempted to stop the vehicle, which sped off. Police pursued the vehicle, which state troopers were able to stop a short time later.

Troy Burek, 34, of 4A Rockledge Court, Ledyard, was found with the cash stolen from the bank when he was taken into custody, police said in the arrest report. The amount of money taken from the bank was not immediately available from state police.

Burek is charged with third-degree robbery, second-degree larceny, reckless driving, engaging police in pursuit and driving with a suspended license. He was being held in lieu of a $100,000 cash or surety bond and is scheduled to appear Monday morning in Norwich Superior Court.
