Crash takes out utility pole, closes road in Waterford

Waterford — A portion of Old Norwich Road was temporarily shut down on Monday following a single-vehicle crash that knocked down a utility pole and left wires strewn across the roadway.

The crash occurred at about 4:45 p.m. The car involved appears to have traveled off the roadway into mailboxes and the utility pole before crashing into a chain link fence in the backyard of 1 Senkow Drive.

Abigail Nadeau, who heard the crash from her 1 Senkow Drive home and ran outside to see if she could help, said there were also three cyclists at the scene, some of whom were being evaluated by emergency medical personnel.

Police said three people, two of the three occupants of the vehicle and one of the cyclists, were taken by ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries. The cyclist appears to have locked up his brakes and crashed after coming upon the downed pole.

The driver of the crash was cited for failure to maintain a lane.

Old Norwich Road has reopened but wass expected to be shut down for several hours after 8 p.m. when Eversource intends to install a new utility pole.
