Old Saybrook man dies after driving car into water

Old Saybrook ― Police said a man died Saturday night after he drove his car into the water at Saybrook Point Marina.

Steven M. Wahle, 76, of Old Saybrook was pronounced dead at the Middlesex Medical Center Shoreline following the incident.

At 10:12 p.m., the Old Saybrook Police Department received a 911 call reporting a car had driven into the water behind the Saybrook Point Inn Resort and Marina at 2 Bridge St. and landed in the Saybrook Point Marina, according to a news release.

Old Saybrook police, fire, EMS and the Middlesex Health Paramedic arrived within in three minutes and found bystanders had already pulled Wahle out of the submerged car and began administering CPR, according to the release. The bystanders included Saybrook Point Inn staff and people attending a wedding celebration, one of whom was an off-duty Rehoboth, Mass., police officer.

Police said the Guilford Fire Department Dive Team was called to the scene to confirm that there were no other victims in the submerged car or water and determined that the only occupant of the car was Wahle.

Police said the car was removed from the water and has been seized by the Old Saybrook police. The investigation remains active.
