The departure of the emergency medical services administrator at the Westerly Ambulance Corps on Monday led to a brief halt to its ambulance service in Westerly and Stonington.

This meant the two communities had to rely on ambulances from neighboring towns to respond to medical calls.

Westerly Ambulance Vice President and Interim Chief of Service Thomas Gibney confirmed Wednesday that the ambulance service parted ways with former EMS Administrator Melissa Davy on Monday but declined to call her departure a termination. He declined to discuss the matter any further, calling it a personnel issue.

“Melissa is no longer with the ambulance corps,” Dibney said.

The result of Davy leaving on Monday morning was that several people called in sick on the second and third shifts. The agency, Dibney said, called in ambulances from the neighboring towns of Charlestown, Ashaway and Stonington to help cover any of the medical calls.

Westerly Ambulance employees a mix of emergency dispatchers, emergency medical technicians and paramedics to answer medical calls in Westerly and a portion of Stonington.

By Tuesday morning, Dibney said things were back to normal. He said he expects the agency’s Board of Governors will be meeting to discuss what is expected to be a reorganization of the ambulance organization.

Davy has been the EMS Administrator for about 14 months, Dibney said, and replaced Kenneth Richards III. There are no immediate plans to replace her.
