Woman killed in Pawcatuck fire identified

Stonington ― Police have identified the woman who died in Wednesday’s fire on Moss Street in Pawcatuck as 58-year-old Diane Mary Gillece.

Gillece’s body was discovered by firefighters searching her 19 Moss St. home as they responded to a kitchen fire on Wednesday morning.

Gillece died of “thermal injuries to airways and body surfaces,” according to the results of an autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The manner of her death is pending further investigation.

Gillece is one of four people who lived at the home, including her husband, Scott Gifford, and daughter, Ashley Gillece, public records show. Ashley Gillece recently ran for a seat in the state House of Representatives representing the 43rd District.

Police said Gillece’s husband was not home at the time of the fire. Ashley Gillece and her son were home but had gotten out of the smoke-filled house by the time firefighters arrived at the scene, police said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the state and local fire marshals.
