Groton police make reckless driving arrest

Groton ― Town police said they charged a Quaker Hill man with reckless driving this past week after he allegedly drove 104 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone.

Nathan R. Johnson, 40, of 66 Lathrop Road, is due in New London Superior Court on May 5.

A Town of Groton police officer was conducting traffic enforcement around Allyn Street and Payer Lane in Mystic at 12 a.m. this past Thursday, when the officer heard the sound of a loud exhaust coming from an area to the south of his location, according to a news release.

The officer saw a vehicle heading around a slight bend near Edgecomb Street ― which intersects with Allyn Street ― about 840 yards from the officer. The officer detected the northbound vehicle’s speed to be 104 miles per hour in a 25 mph State Traffic Control zone, police said.

“Motorists are reminded and encouraged to slow down when driving, not only on Groton roadways, but on all Connecticut roadways as well,” police said in a news release. “The hazards associated with speeding far outweigh the need for someone to drive in a reckless manner to make it to their destination a minute or two ahead of their planned arrival time. Groton Police Officers, including our traffic unit, will be proactively addressing hazardous driving and motorists operating their vehicles under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.”

Police also encourage people with information regarding traffic or other incidents involving criminal activity to call the police department at (860) 441-6712.
