New London workers injured after garbage truck strikes Amtrak bridge

New London ― Two city workers were injured Friday morning after their garbage truck struck the Amtrak train bridge on Walbach Street.

Later on Friday night, Mayor Michael Passero said the employees were treated and released from Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

Fire Battalion Chief Mark Waters said the call came in at 9:43 a.m. and both workers were taken by ambulance to the hospital. He said the truck got stuck under the bridge and caused significant damage to the front cab and back of the truck.

Waters said the bridge was inspected by Amtrak which determined there was cosmetic damage but no structural damage.

Passero said trucks will routinely hit the bridge and the city is taking measures, such as new signs and barriers, to prevent such incidents from happening again.
