Suspect in killing of Norwich woman hospitalized after shooting himself

The suspect in the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old Norwich woman on Friday in Brockton, Mass., was hospitalized over the weekend with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

Gelson Fernandes, 29, of Brockton, was wanted in connection with the early morning shooting death of Stephanie Beatty of Norwich. Her body was found inside a parked vehicle.

Fernandes was found on Saturday with the self-inflicted gunshot wound and taken to a Boston hospital for treatment, Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz said in a statement.

Beatty and Fernandes were “previously acquainted,” Cruz’s office said.
