    Fire damages Stonington home

    Stonington ― A Monday morning fire badly damaged a one-story home at 350 Greenhaven Road. There were no injuries.

    At 7 a.m. Wequetequock firefighters responded to the basement fire in the home. Chief Joe Burdick said a family was at home and heard popping noises before smoke detectors sounded. They escaped without injury.

    The home is owned by David and Susan Hammond, according to town records.

    Burdick said it took his firefighters and those from numerous area departments about 20 minutes to knock down the fire. He added it then took more time to extinguish hidden areas of fire. Firefighters also had to battle strong winds and heavy rain. No firefighters were injured.

    Burdick said the home sustained moderate damage to the basement and smoke damage to the first floor. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

    Firefighters from Pawcatuck, Stonington Borough, Old Mystic, Quiambaug, Westerly, North Stonington, Ashway, R.I,. and Hope Valley responded. Tanker trucks were also needed to provide water to extinguish the blaze. The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
