    Fire displaces five in Uncasville

Montville ― Three members of an Uncasville family were taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation following a fire early Thursday at the family’s home at 185 Park Ave. Extension.

The fire was reported at 1:45 a.m. and members from all four of the town’s volunteer fire departments responded and quickly extinguished a fire near a wood stove in the basement, Montville Fire Marshal Paul Barnes said.

Barnes said the fire and smoke caused a moderate amount of damage to the basement and burned some electrical wiring, causing the home to be uninhabitable. Even though the family of five, two adults and three children, will be temporarily displaced, Barnes said it could have been worse.

The home had no working smoke alarms and the family was sleeping as the house filled with smoke, Barnes said. A woman, who has a medical condition, woke up coughing and turned the light on in the bedroom to discover the smoke, he said.

“This could have taken a much more disastrous turn. They were actually very lucky,” Barnes said.

After realizing the house was full of smoke, Barnes said a man in the house tried to extinguish the fire himself and eventually got everyone out.

Barnes said he determined the cause of the fire was accidental and sparked by improperly discarded wood stove ashes.

The Red Cross is providing aid to the family, including a temporary place to stay. The fire was contained to the basement and Barnes said there was minimal structural damage.
