Man charged with causing wreck on I-95 in Waterford

Waterford ― State police on Wednesday arrested a 23-year-old Old Saybrook man after they said his reckless driving caused a rollover crash on Interstate 95 last year.

Jalen Johnson was charged with reckless driving, unsafe passing, making an improper turn and first-degree reckless endangerment in connection with a April 7, 2023, crash on I-95 in Waterford, just prior to the Exit 82 off-ramp.

The two-car crash led to minor injuries to the driver of an SUV that rolled over after being struck by Johnson’s car, police said.

State police said Johnson had denied causing the crash but a witness to the crash had come forward with video recorded from a Tesla with an integrated video system called Sentry mode. In the video, police said Johnson could be seen driving at a high rate of speed, weaving in and out of traffic, losing control of his car and striking the SUV, causing the rollover.

Free on a $10,000 bond, Johnson is due to appear Jan. 31 in New London Superior Court.
