    Motorcyclist seriously injured in crash with pickup in Ledyard

    Ledyard -- A Groton motorcyclist suffered serious injuries Saturday afternoon when he was struck by a pickup truck driven by a 17-year-old boy from Gales Ferry.

    Derek Palmerone, 52, was originally taken to The William W. Backus Hospital but was later flown by Life Star helicopter to Hartford Hospital.

    Ledyard police said they responded to the crash at 3:45 p.m. after receiving a 911 call.

    Portions of Route 214 were closed for approximately three hours while members of the Ledyard Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team investigated the crash.

    According to police, Palmerone, who was driving a 1994 Harley-Davidson, was turning left from Whalehead Road onto Route 214 when he was struck by the Ford Ranger pickup which was east on Route 214. The name of the 17-year-old driver was not released. Anyone who witnessed the crash or who has information that might aid police in the investigation, is asked to call Officer Troy Johnson at (860) 464-6400.
