Slick conditions Saturday morning cause crashes across region

Groton — Two people were taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital following a one-car rollover on I-95 northbound, prior to exit 89, on Saturday morning.

Information on the nature of their injuries was not available on Saturday.

Just before 8 a.m., a car carrying four people went into the center median and rolled over, according to state police Trooper Jeffrey Fahey. The cause was not yet determined but he said he imagined it was related to the weather conditions.

Black ice and slick roads led to crashes across the region on Saturday morning. Fahey said state police Troop E, based in Montville, responded to 12 or 13 incidents between about 7 and 11:30 a.m. They were mostly related to ice and mainly on interstates 95 and 395.

At 6:37 a.m., a state police cruiser spun out in the icy roadway on I-95 southbound between exits 71 and 70 in Old Lyme, according to an accident summary. The vehicle struck the concrete barrier in the left shoulder and the guardrail in the right shoulder, and the driver sustained possible injuries.
