New London — With the help of surveillance video footage and the Waterford police department, city police on Sunday arrested a Stonington man in connection with a burglary that took place earlier in the day.

Michael Algiere, 48, of 17 Mayflower Court, Pawcatuck, was charged with third-degree burglary, sixth-degree larceny and third-degree criminal mischief. He was held on a $25,000 surety bond and was due in New London Superior Court Monday.

According to police, officers learned of the burglary, which took place at a Glenwood Avenue home, when the homeowner saw the incident on a home security system and called 911. That was just after 11 a.m., police said.

Police said officers went to the home and found signs of forced entry but no burglar. Officers then searched the area and broadcasted a description of the suspect.

According to police, Waterford officers called “a short time later” and said they had a man in custody who fit the description of the suspect. City officers responded to Route 1 near the Waterford-East Lyme border with photos from the home security footage.

According to police, the man in custody and the man in the footage were the same. With the assistance of Waterford officers, police said they located evidence from the Glenwood Avenue burglary. Algiere later confessed to the crime, police said.
