East Lyme — Members of the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection are investigating how an Audi ended up in Gorton Pond on Tuesday afternoon.

Police Chief Mike Finkelstein said DEEP officials, police officers and members of the Niantic Fire Department responded to the scene off Kevin Road about 3:15 p.m. He said a female driver had exited the car before it began to roll toward the pond.

Finkelstein said DEEP took the case because the pond is home to a DEEP boat launch.

DEEP spokesman Chris Collibee said no state property was damaged during the incident. The investigation remains active.
