Detour in place after crash isolates East Lyme neighborhood

East Lyme — A detour is in place for the Giants Neck neighborhood after a Thursday morning crash brought down a utility pole on Giants Neck Road.

Public safety officials warned residents of the crash near 58 Giants Neck Road around 11:30 a.m. Crews have closed Giants Neck Road, which is a dead-end road that intersects with state Route 156 and serves as the primary means of accessing the Giants Neck community.

As an alternative, officials have opened a Rocky Neck State Park service road to serve as a cut-through. The service road, which is only wide enough for one vehicle, lets out near 88 Giants Neck Road.

School bus drivers have been notified of the detour. An Eversource crew is on scene and has estimated it could take up to 10 hours to replace the pole. At 1 p.m., Eversource was reporting 775 power outages in the area.

Officials urged anyone who has to use to service road to drive slowly and use extra caution.
