Groton Town police parking lot deemed safe Internet exchange site
Groton — A portion of the town police parking lot is now a place where people can go to exchange goods purchased from online sites such as Craigslist, police announced Friday.
A sign that says “community meetup spot” marks the southwest portion of the lot where residents should go. OfferUp, another buy-and-sell website, donated the sign.
Police won’t oversee the transactions, but cameras monitor the lot and officers are just a few steps away. Police encouraged residents to do their due diligence before agreeing to a transaction.
“Occasionally, people have reported robberies and frauds being perpetrated during these sales, so the mere suggestion of meeting at a police station can limit this possibility,” Chief Louis J. Fusaro Jr. said in a news release.
The Groton Town Police Department is at 68 Groton Long Point Road.
