New London — Road construction work on Ocean Avenue, in anticipation of high volumes of beach traffic for the upcoming holiday, is forcing detours and road closures starting Friday and ending Tuesday.

Ocean Avenue, south of Gardner Avenue to Neptune Avenue, will be closed Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday from morning through evening, according to a statement from the city.

All beach traffic will be detoured from Ocean Avenue at Gardner Avenue, left to Lester Street, right to Lower Boulevard, right to Pequot Avenue, right to Neptune Avenue and then right toward Ocean Beach Park. The recommended route to Ocean Beach Park will be from Montauk Avenue to Pequot Avenue.

Local traffic only will be permitted on Ocean Avenue, allowing residents access to the streets within the construction zone to get to and from their homes.

Due to the road construction project, parking will be prohibited where posted along the construction site. Beach traffic is required to utilize the surface lots at Ocean Beach Park. Once the lot is filled, police will determine if residential parking rules are temporarily suspended on streets adjacent to Ocean Beach Park.

Residential parking without permits, where allowed, will be permitted on the following streets: Neptune, Pequot, Park, Elrin Place, Stuart, Bentley, Elliott and Mott.

Police will enforce parking regulations in these areas for the following violations: No parking posted, near fire hydrants, handicap permit required, obstructing driveways, obstructing traffic, parking within 20 feet of a corner and obstructing cross walks.
