Man arrested in 2015 gas station robbery in Montville
Connecticut state police arrested a New York man Wednesday in connection with the March 2015 robbery of a Montville gas station.
Nicholas Fiore, 27, has been charged with first-degree robbery, fifth-degree larceny and conspiracy, according to the state police incident summary.
Fiore has been serving a sentence at Bare Hill Correctional Facility in Malone, N.Y., after confessing to involvement in a March 2015 string of robberies in New York.
On March 22, 2015, police were notified of a robbery at the Chucky's Mobil gas station on Norwich-New London Turnpike in Montville, according to a sworn affidavit from Connecticut State Police Detective Humberto Morales Jr. The lone store clerk told police that a man wearing a mask and holding a handgun entered the store about 11:30 that night, and then fled with $542.
Morales later learned that a similar robbery occurred at the Honey Plus convenience store on State Street in New London less than five hours prior, the affidavit stated. The Honey Plus store clerk told New London Police Department officers that a man entered about 6 p.m., pointed a gun at him and left with between $1,500 and $2,000.
Through comparing store surveillance videos, Morales and New London police Detective Richard Curcuro determined that the perpetrator in both robberies appeared to be the same person, the affidavit said.
Police also connected the incidents to three New York robberies — in Wappinger Falls, Clarkstown and Cortlandt — and one in Greenwich, Conn. They said they identified Fiore and his partner in the robberies, Michael Caccavale, through surveillance video showing their vehicle.
In investigating, New York State Police determined that Fiore had been arrested on weapons and drug charges in Norwich, Conn., in March 2015.
Fiore confessed to being involved in the New York robberies but denied involvement in the Connecticut ones, according to the affidavit.
Fiore and Caccavale told police that they robbed the stores to feed their heroin addiction, and that they were on their way to the casinos in Connecticut when police stopped them in Norwich.
Caccavale also denied knowledge of the New London and Montville robberies, the affidavit stated.
A Rockland County grand jury indicted both on second-degree robbery and fourth-degree conspiracy charges. In March 2016, Fiore agreed to a five-year prison sentence, while Caccavale agreed to seven years.
Police in September 2017 reviewed the gambling activity of Fiore and Caccavale at both Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, and then applied for the arrest warrant for Fiore in the Chucky's Mobil robbery in Montville.
