Man accused of burglarizing two East Lyme businesses facing new charges

A Griswold man accused of stealing from two East Lyme businesses last year also is suspected in a recent string of home burglaries, state police said.

Police said they believe Jeffrey Barrett Neilan, 46, is a conspirator in “several” burglaries in southeastern Connecticut this year.

Police didn’t specify when or where the burglaries occurred but said the Preston Resident State Trooper’s Office, Troop E in Montville, the Statewide Narcotics Task Force and local police departments are working together to make arrests.

Police last week identified Scott Tyrone, 36, of Norwich as another suspect in the burglary spree. Police said they believe he stole from two Preston homes after being released from court April 23.

Records show Neilan has five pending criminal cases, including the two out of East Lyme (he was charged in August with burglarizing il Pomod'Oro Restaurant & Pizzeria and Post Road Market in July).

Neilan was free on bond when police questioned him about the recent burglaries last week. Upon identifying him as a suspect — and learning he had missed a court date for his pending cases — police applied for and received warrants for his arrest.

Police said they found Neilan at The Clarion Inn in New London on Monday and charged him on the warrants with two counts of first-degree failure to appear in court and three counts of second-degree failure to appear in court.

They expect to charge him in the residential burglaries soon.

Neilan, assigned a bond of $104,000, was due Tuesday in New London Superior Court.
