2-year-old found wandering in New London reunited with parents

New London — A toddler found wandering alone in the area of Montauk and Willetts avenues early Monday has been reunited with his parents.

Police said the 2-year-old was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital as a precautionary measure after a motorist spotted him alone shortly after 4 a.m. on Monday. Police said the motorist immediately stopped, attended to the child and called police. Police officers and firefighters joined in a neighborhood canvas to try and locate the child’s home.

The state Department of Children and Families was notified. The toddler’s parents were located asleep at their residence on Crescent Street.

Police said the toddler had let himself out a secured door and it was apparent that the parents had taken proactive steps, such as trying to block one entrance, to prevent the child from getting out the house. The parents were visibly shaken when they realized what had happened, said New London Police Capt. Brian Wright.

The parents were reunited with the toddler at the hospital. No criminal charges are expected.

Police said “credit and kudos go to the motorist who involved herself and ensured the safety and well-being of the toddler. NLPD salutes you,” Wright said in a statement.
