Police: White powder found in Niantic mailbox not hazardous

East Lyme — A white powder substance found in the mailbox of a Niantic residence Tuesday was determined to not be hazardous, East Lyme Police Chief Michael Finkelstein said.
Officers and detectives from the East Lyme Police Department, as well as the Niantic and Flanders fire departments, Submarine Base Fire Department Hazmat Team and State Police Emergency Services Unit responded after a resident of Fairhaven Road reported the substance around 12:32 p.m., Finkelstein said.
He said at 2:42 p.m. emergency responders were able to confirm "that the substance was not hazardous" and "that there is no criminal aspect at this time."
