Gaskin charged with sexually assaulting second student in New London

Former New London Schools behavioral specialist Corriche Gaskin has been charged with sex crimes involving a second minor who attended the Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School.

Gaskin, 35, was arraigned Thursday in New London Superior Court on two charges of second-degree sexual assault and two charges of risk of injury to a minor.

convicted felon who was hired by New London Schools in 2014 as a paraprofessional, and then promoted to a "school climate specialist" at the middle school a year later, Gaskin is at the center of an investigation that has expanded into other parts of the school system, resulted in three arrests and several faculty suspensions, sparked public outrage and a review by the state Office of the Child Advocate.

Gaskin also served the school district as a basketball coach and an after-school youth mentor and was part of the paid staff during athletic events. He since has been terminated.

He is now accused by New London police of sexually assaulting at least two minors and of secretly recording the encounters, and with having sexual relations at the school with at least two teachers — ages 25 and 21. He additionally is charged with showing students the sex videos.

Gaskin, who is being held at the Bridgeport Correctional Center, wore tan prison pants and a gray sweatshirt, handcuffs and leg irons as he was arraigned before Judge Hillary B. Strackbein in a nearly empty courtroom Thursday. The judge read Gaskin his rights, entered a not guilty plea on his behalf and set bond at $50,000 for the new charges, bringing his total bonds to $650,000.

The judge granted prosecutor Theresa Anne Ferryman's request to continue sealing the arrest warrant affidavit detailing the new charges at least through Gaskin's next court date, which is Aug. 1. Ferryman and Gaskin's attorney, Michael A. Blanchard, said they couldn't comment.

Attorney Gordon Videll said his law firm, Synodi and Videll, is representing the minor victim in the newest case, who is referred to in the initial arrest warrant, which is unsealed, as "Witness 1."

Videll said that he, too, is waiting to see the new warrant.

According to the unsealed warrant, the child was 13 when the alleged incidents began. She initially denied having sexual relations with Gaskin but confirmed he showed her sexually explicit videos during the 2016-17 school year.

"Right now we're just working to make sure she gets the help she needs," Videll said of the teen.

The dates of the incidents alleged in the warrant that was served Thursday, and remains sealed, are March 21, 2016, and "on or about June 2017."

As for the ever-expanding investigation, Videll said, "We're closer to the beginning than the end of the investigation. There's a lot going on. Until the investigation is closer to the end, there will be a lot of details unknown to the public."

Gaskin had posted a $100,000 bond following his initial arrest on April 5 on a charge of risk of injury to a minor.

He has been incarcerated since his second arrest, on May 7, when New London police charged him with second-degree sexual assault, third-degree possession of child pornography, voyeurism, disseminating voyeuristic material and four counts of risk of injury to a minor. His bond in that case is $500,000, and his attorney said he would not be able to post it.

In that case, police allege he had sex with an eighth-grader in his office at Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School, and secretly recorded the encounter on his cellphone, at the end of the 2016-17 school year.

That victim told police she was called to Gaskin's office for "no apparent reason," and he indicated to her that he was told she wanted to perform a sexual act on him. She told police that she complied after he exposed himself.

Gaskin additionally is charged with recording and sharing the cellphone videos of himself during sexual encounters with at least two teachers inside the school during the 2016-17 school year. One of those teachers, a 25-year-old not identified by police, said she had sex with Gaskin on multiple occasions inside the school, including in a supply closet and her classroom.

A 21-year-old paraprofessional working at the middle school also admitted to multiple sexual encounters with Gaskin and said she had seen numerous videos on Gaskin's cellphone. The woman told police she thought Gaskin's recording the encounters was "his thing."

On May 28, former Bennie Dover teacher Melissa Rodriguez was charged with failure to report abuse, neglect or injury to a child or imminent risk of serious harm to a child by a mandated reporter. The arrest warrant affidavit in the case is sealed. She is free on a $10,000 bond and has pleaded not guilty to the charge. Her next court date is Aug. 7.

Also arrested during the ongoing probe was Jevon Elmore, 25, a middle school paraprofessional and high school track coach. He has pleaded not guilty to second-degree sexual assault. He appeared in court on Thursday, when Judge Strackbein granted the prosecutor's motion to continue sealing his arrest warrant for another 45 days due to the ongoing investigation. At the request of Elmore's attorney, William T. Koch Jr., the judge also agreed to reduce Elmore's $150,000 bond to $100,000. Koch said Elmore, a lifelong New London resident, is being monitored by the Alternative Incarceration Center and that his last urine test was negative for drugs.

Elmore paid a bondsman a percentage of the total, as is customary, for a surety bond. Elmore is hoping to get some of his money back due to the bond reduction.

Prosecutor Lawrence J. Tytla, who was handling the case Thursday, said, "As for him getting money back, that's a contractual issue between him and the bondsman."

Schools Superintendent Cynthia Ritchie said Thursday that she has not been made aware of any new details in Gaskin's case. She said the district has ongoing communications with both New London police and the state Department of Children and Families.

The state Office of the Child Advocate is in the early stages an investigation into the district. Ritchie said she expects a meeting with a representative from that office in the coming few weeks.

In addition to the investigations, Ritchie has hired a consultant to perform a hiring audit, a deep dive into historical data, procedures, practices, policies and components of school employees personnel files. Ritchie said that audit will continue throughout the month of July and perhaps into August.
