Franklin accident leaves one driver dead

Franklin — State police are investigating a motor vehicle accident Friday afternoon in which a 96-year-old North Franklin man was killed.

According to a spokesman from Troop K, about 3:46 p.m. 46-year-old Richard Cormier of Deep River was driving a tractor-trailer truck south on Route 32 and saw Joseph Morse attempting to turn left from a residential driveway into the southbound lane. Cormier attempted to brake to avoid a collision and veered left toward northbound traffic but still collided with Morse's van, which continued forward into a wooded area adjacent to northbound 32 and rolled onto its side.

Morse, of 540 Route 32, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Cormier had suspected minor injuries and was transported to Backus Hospital for treatment, police said. The road was shut down for some time as police investigated the scene.
