Stonington — The Stonington Police Department announced that they issued 29 citations for cellphone use between Aug. 1 and Aug. 15, as part of an initiative targeting distracted driving.

According to a news release, Stonington police participated in the statewide "U Drive, U Text, U Pay" initiative funded through a grant by the state Department of Transportation's Highway Safety Office and the National Highway Traffic Administration. Stonington police did additional patrols focused on drivers using cellphones.

"As you pick up that phone while driving remember how frustrated you get when you see others doing so," police said in the release. "Do your part to keep the roads safe. For those who don't text or use hand held devices while driving, we thank you."
