Stonington police charge 'heavily intoxicated' man with racing engine of boat tied to dock

Mystic -- A man who Stonington police described as "heavily intoxicated" jumped aboard a boat tied up at Seaport Marine Friday night and pushed the throttle to full, striking the dock and another boat.

Officers with the help of other boaters were able to shut down the engine after several minutes and before the boat broke free of its lines.

John Kehoe, 25, of 1 Crystal Lake Road, Groton, was charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree reckless boating, operating a vessel under the influence of alcohol or drugs, breach of peace, second-degree criminal mischief and third-degree criminal mischief. He was held on a $10,000 bond over the weekend and is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on Monday.

Police said the incident began at 9:49 p.m. when a man reported he was “pushed and manhandled” by Kehoe in the area of the Red 36 restaurant. The man said Kehoe then ran to a boat tied up at the marina where he then heard a loud noise coming from the boat. Police said Kehoe damaged items aboard the boat and and damaged the railing of an adjacent sailboat. As a police officer walked Kehoe off the property, police said he headbutted a window at Seaport Marine, breaking it. Police said Kehoe was not injured.
