Fire causes heavy damage to vacant Route 32 building in Montville

Montville — Several local fire departments responded to a 10 p.m. fire that gutted a vacant two-story mixed-use building at 888 Norwich-New London Turnpike on Thursday.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire engulfing the second story of the house, Fire Marshal Bill Bundy said Friday morning. The house, which has a sign in front advertising psychic readings, was unoccupied, and firefighters took a defensive approach and did not enter the building. It took about two hours to knock down the blaze, and Bundy said one Montville paid firefighter received a minor injury that was treated at the scene.

Firefighters remained throughout the night to douse hot spots and secure the scene, Bundy said. The Montville Public Works Department boarded up the building Friday morning.

Bundy called the state fire marshal’s office for assistance upon arrival. The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined. The building did have power prior to the fire, he said.

In addition to the Montville Fire Department, crews from Mohegan, Oakdale, Norwich City, Mohegan Tribal, Laurel Hill, Gardner Lake, Salem, Yantic, Gales Ferry, Quaker Hill, East Great Plain and Poquetanuck responded to the fire.
