    State police cited more than 2,500 drivers during holiday season

    State police reported Thursday that they cited 2,732 drivers for speeding, hazardous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the holiday season.

    Between Dec. 20 and Wednesday, New Year's Day, state police issued 2,732 citations — including 76 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs — and responded to nearly 1,000 accidents.

    A total of 2,027 drivers were ticketed for hazardous driving, which includes unsafe lane changes, failure to move over and following too closely. Another 629 drivers were cited for speeding, according to state police.

    Police responded to 952 accidents, with injuries reported in 142 of them. Four people were killed in crashes in Westbrook, Hartford, Windham and Bethany, police said.

    In total, police responded to 14,912 calls for service, police said.
