Note in backpack at Cutler Middle School deemed not a 'credible threat'

Groton — The school administration and police determined a note found in a student's backpack Thursday at Cutler Arts and Humanities Magnet Middle School wasn't a "credible threat," according to Superintendent Michael Graner.

Graner said the note was brought to the school administration's attention Thursday morning. It was not clear whether or not there was a safety concern, but to be on the safe side, the school administration immediately contacted the school resource officer. Graner explained that the note was unclear but could have been interpreted as a potential threat toward peers.

The school resource officer talked to the student, and by mid-morning the officer and the administration determined there was no serious concern, Graner said.

"There was not in any way a credible threat or danger," Graner said.

Principal Peter Bass notified parents and guardians Thursday afternoon.

"Police officers reviewed the information and determined that it did not represent a credible threat," Bass wrote in part of the correspondence. "Due to student confidentiality I am unable to share further details, but I wanted you to be aware that appropriate action has been taken by both the police and the school to address the situation. Thank you for your attention and support as we continue to work to ensure a safe environment for our students."
