UPDATED: Man steals empty cash register from Hot Rod Cafe

New London — An unidentified man broke into Hot Rod Cafe at 114 Bank St. early Sunday morning and stole an empty cash register.

Police responded to the restaurant about 4:15 a.m., according to Capt. Brian Wright. Police found a smashed door in the rear of the restaurant and a cash register ripped from a monitor connected to it.

Hot Rod Cafe spread news of the incident on its Facebook page Sunday morning.

"If you saw anything or hear anything or see someone with low intelligence carrying a cash drawer with wires hanging off, let me know," the post read. "Other downtown businesses beware and set your alarms."

Wright said police are following a few leads after watching surveillance footage, which showed what looked to be a man wearing a hooded, zip-up sweatshirt, sneakers and baggy jeans. Wright also said the suspect has a thick bushy mustache and eyebrows.

Hot Rod posted surveillance videos on Facebook showing a man hurrying around the restaurant and eventually tearing the cash register from where it was installed.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
