Teen suffers smoke inhalation in Norwich fire

Norwich — A teenage boy was being treated for smoke inhalation after a fire at a Norwich home Wednesday morning, according to fire officials.

The 14-year-old boy escaped the home at 14 Stonington Road before firefighters arrived about 8:10 a.m. He was taken to Backus Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, the Norwich Fire Department said.

When firefighters arrived at the home, they found the front porch and first floor engulfed in flames. Firefighters searched the home for other family members, who all got out safely. The American Red Cross was assisting four people who were displaced, the department said.

The fire was under control in about 40 minutes with 13 firefighters responding from the Norwich Fire Department. The Mohegan Tribal Rapid Intervention Team, East Great Plain Cascade Unit, Poquetanuck engine and the Norwich Police Department also were on the scene.

The fire extended to the home's attic, but most of the damage was contained to the first floor, which had smoke and fire damage.

The Norwich fire marshal was investigating the cause of the fire.
