New London — One person was killed and two people were wounded Sunday night in a shooting inside a house on Home Street, according to police.

Three men were found with gunshot wounds at 11:33 p.m. and taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. One of the victims was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

Police said the shooting did not appear to be a random act.

Crime scene tape blocked off Home Street from Franklin Street to Hempstead Street Monday morning. About 8 a.m., an investigator wearing an all white jumpsuit was walking up and down Home Street filming the scene. The road remained closed at nightfall and investigators remained at the scene.

A brown Audi sedan was parked Monday morning near the corner of Home and Franklin with scratches and dents on the passenger side. Beside the car lay a pair of Nike sneakers, socks and a torn up, bloody T-shirt.

Zamir Velazquez, 19, lives across the street and said he heard “what sounded like what a mother would sound like when she finds out her kid is dead, that’s the only way I can describe it, it was a bloodcurdling scream.”

Velazquez said he saw a few police cruisers speed up Franklin Street, loop around and stop at the corner of Home and Franklin streets.

He said he watched three or four police officers pull out their weapons and order a young man to the ground. The young man repeatedly told officers that his stomach hurt and he couldn’t breathe, Velazquez said.

Darren Hall, 36, was asleep at 11:30 Sunday night when we was woken up by the sound of fireworks, or so he thought. This morning, he realized it was gunshots he’d heard.

Hall said he came to take a look at the crime scene after learning what had happened. He added that he was expecting to learn that the person who was killed was someone he knew.

“It’s hard when you know you know the person, this town is too small,” said Hall, who stays at the Covenant Shelter. He said the sight of bloody clothes at a crime scene was, to him, “a reminder of what I don’t want to go back to.”

“The community needs to say they’re not putting up with this anymore,” he said.

His friend, Luis Santiago, 38, was with him Monday morning and said he was shocked to see such a crime happen in the neighborhood.

Iylee Cypriano, 20, was in her bedroom on Franklin Street watching a movie when she saw police lights through her window.

She looked outside and saw police getting out of their vehicles, surrounding a young Black man in a torn white shirt and ordering him to get on the ground on the corner of Home Street and Franklin Street, where the Audi was parked. She recorded the incident on her cellphone.

About a half hour before, she said she thought she had heard fireworks. After police arrived she heard women screaming and crying, she said.

A Franklin Street resident said he was woken up by a phone call from a friend around 12:07 a.m. who wanted to make sure he was OK, but he hadn’t heard anything.

The man, who only wanted to be identified by his first name, DeWayne, said that he came down to the scene Monday morning to try to figure out what was happening. He said that he has lived on Franklin Street for four years and that the neighborhood is normally quiet.

Another neighbor on Franklin Street said that she came home from work about 7:30 a.m. and was surprised by the crime scene. Her daughters, who were home, didn’t hear anything Sunday night but heard from other neighbors this morning that the shooting stemmed from a robbery.

New London police and the Connecticut State Police Major Crimes Unit are investigating the shootings. Anyone with information is asked to call (860) 447-1481 or text NLPDTip to Tip411.
