    Tenants evacuated during fire at apartment complex in Norwich

    Norwich — Tenants were evacuated from the Ponemah Mill apartment complex in the Taftville section of Norwich after a fire broke out Tuesday morning, according to fire officials.

    Fire officials responded just after 8 a.m. to reports of a fire at The Lofts at Ponemah Mills, a building with approximately 200 apartments located at 607 Norwich Ave., according to the Taftville Fire Company.

    The fire started while crews were renovating new units in the building, which is set to have about 300 units in total. Workers were completing a renovation when a fire sparked inside a wall. Firefighters were called to the building immediately and the fire was put out in less than 10 minutes, according to fire company Deputy Chief Tom Jencks.

    Fire alarms were sounded in the building and tenants who were home evacuated. No injuries were reported and no one was displaced.
