East Lyme police say suspect attempted to ram police cruiser

East Lyme — An East Lyme police officer had a close call Monday during an encounter with a suspect in an out-of-town crime.

Police said that East Lyme officers were assisting a law enforcement agency find a vehicle involved in criminal activity in another jurisdiction. Police found the vehicle in the Exit 74 commuter parking lot off Interstate 95. At 2:10 p.m. officers arrived and pulled in front of the vehicle. Police said a man quickly jumped into the driver’s seat of the vehicle and as an officer left his cruiser to make contact, the suspect quickly reversed over a curb and drove forward at the cruiser.

The officer who was outside was able to get into the cruiser and drive it in reverse prior to being rammed, police said. Police said the suspect drive off in an “extremely reckless manner” onto Flanders Road.

Police ended the pursuit because of safety concerns and heavy traffic.

Jessica Durazzo, 32, of Branford, who had been with the suspect, remained at the scene. Police said their investigation revealed that she had an outstanding arrest warrant in West Haven for engaging officers in pursuit, reckless driving and speeding. She was taken into custody without incident and transferred to the custody of the West Haven Police Department.

East Lyme police said they have identified the suspect and plan to submit an application for an arrest warrant. Chief Michael Finkelstein said the suspect is wanted by multiple agencies around the state who hold warrants for his arrest. The warrants include charges related to other pursuits.
