UPDATED: Storrs teen dies in East Lyme crash

East Lyme — An 18-year-old Storrs man died in an early morning crash Monday in the area of exit 73 on Interstate 95, state police said.

Police said Joey Gaudreau-Mitchell was driving in the left lane on I-95 south in a 2019 Toyota Camry around 2 a.m. when the vehicle traveled across the left shoulder, into the median and struck a delineator post.

The car traveled back onto the highway and across to the right shoulder where it spun and struck a concrete base and guardrail that sent the car airborne. Police said the car rolled over before striking a tree. The engine compartment ended up 50 feet from the car which finally came to rest on its driver’s side against the tree, police said.

Gaudreau-Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

The highway was closed between exits 74 and 73 for several hours following the accident.
