New London — A social media post referencing a threat at Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School prompted enhanced police presence at city schools Thursday.

It is unclear where the rumor about a student bringing a gun to school originated but New London Police Capt. Matthew Galante said police received multiple calls from concerned citizens about the rumor.

Police said there is an investigation. The enhanced police presence was a proactive course of action taken in partnership with the school district “to ease the concerns of the community not as validation to any rumored threat,” Galante said.

In a notice to families, the school district thanked everyone who reported the rumor and asked students, parents and community members to report any suspicions or concerns related to school safety.
