State police: Intoxicated driver assaulted officer and K-9 in Preston
Preston — State police said an intoxicated driver who fled the scene of a crash Sunday morning pointed a gun at a police officer and attacked a police dog.
State and Montville police said they were dispatched at 5 a.m. to a report of a car crashing into a guardrail at the intersection of routes 12 and 2A. Emergency medical responders who arrived first saw that the driver, Presley Almanzar-DeJesus, 25, of Norwalk was in possession of a handgun.
Almanzar-DeJesus began to walk away from the accident and toward the woods, according to police. When a Montville police officer got out of his cruiser and walked toward the woods, Almanzar-DeJesus pointed the firearm at him. The police officer drew his weapon and Almanzar-DeJesus ran deeper into the woods.
The Montville officer sent his K-9 into the woods after Almanzar-DeJesus. Police said the K-9 was able to subdue him by latching onto his leg. Almanzar-DeJesus punched the K-9 several times and gouged at its eyes, according to the release. The police officer tased Almanzar-DeJesus and took him into custody.
During a search of Almanzar-DeJesus' car and the surrounding area, police said they located a loaded high-capacity magazine, a .38 Special revolver and a Glock 9mm. Police later discovered the guns were stolen from Bridgeport.
Almanzar-DeJesus was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, failure to drive in proper lane, evading responsibility, cruelty to animals, assault on a police officer, interfering with a police officer, possession of a high-capacity magazine, two counts of criminal possession of a firearm, two counts of possessing a stolen firearm, two counts of carrying a pistol or revolver without a permit, two counts of carrying a dangerous weapon, first-degree criminal attempt at assault, first-degree threatening and criminal use of a firearm.
Almanzar-DeJesus was held in lieu of $250,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in Norwich Superior Court on Monday morning.
In a Facebook post Monday, Montville Police said the officer and K-9, Barrett, are "doing fine."
