Norwich — Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire Saturday afternoon at R&A Convenience Store at 213 Main St.

Crews responded to a call about 2:17 p.m. and arrived on scene within three minutes to find heavy smoke coming out of the building, Norwich Fire Department Battalion Chief Gregory Despathy said.

The first responders found a refrigeration unit on fire and extinguished it within about 10 minutes, he said. They searched the building and evacuated people from the convenience store and the residences in the back of the structure. The extent of the damage was limited to the convenience store, and the residents will be able to get back into the building, he said.

A firefighter was taken to Backus Hospital due to exhaustion, Despathy said. The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, he said.

The Norwich Fire Department responded, along with the Norwich volunteer fire departments, Mohegan Tribal FAST Team, Norwich Utilities and Norwich police.
