Child dies after canoe capsizes in North Stonington

North Stonington — A child has died after a canoe capsized in Wyassup Lake early Friday evening.

Officers with the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection's environmental conservation police are investigating the 5:15 p.m. incident. DEEP spokesman Will Healey in a statement said two adults and two children were on the boat when it overturned, tossing all four into the water.

Healey said all four people were transported to Westerly Hospital.

"One juvenile has been pronounced deceased," he said.

North Stonington Deputy Fire Chief Joe Cassata on Friday said CPR was performed on the child by North Stonington first responders as well as a member of the Connecticut State Police.

Cassata said volunteer firefighters responded with rescue boats to the call about canoers in distress. The deputy chief, who lives on the same street as the Wyassup Lake boat launch, said the department responded within minutes to the call.

He said mutual aid came from the Ashaway, R.I., Pawcatuck, Old Mystic and Mystic fire departments. In addition to North Stonington's two ambulances, Westerly and Mystic River sent EMS support.
