Several downtown Mystic restaurants closed Tuesday due to precautionary boil water advisory following water main break
Mystic — A swath of restaurants in downtown Mystic were closed Tuesday due to a precautionary boil water advisory following a water main break on Gravel Street Monday evening, according to Ledge Light Health District and Aquarion Water Co.
Aquarion Water Company on Monday issued a boil water advisory for properties that included addresses on West Main Street, Church, Forsythe, Gravel and Holmes streets.
The notice stated that those streets "may have experienced a period of low pressure" Monday night due to the water main break and "there is a possibility of contamination of drinking water," though the system "is disinfected via chlorination to minimize this risk."
"The Department of Public Health recommends as a precaution that customers boil their water before consuming it, or use bottled water, until it can be confirmed that the water is safe to drink," the notice from Aquarion added. Aquarion said the advisory "will remain in effect until further notice," with water samples being collected Tuesday and results expected 24 hours later.
Specifically, the addresses listed were 6 through 46 West Main Street; 5,6,8,10,11 Church Street; 1,4,5,6,7 Forsythe St.; 2,3,5,7,9,11,13,15,17,19,21,23 Gravel St.; and 1,2,5,6,14,15 Holmes St.
Inspectors from Ledge Light Health District went door-to-door to restaurants within that area on Tuesday to explain the situation, after the state Department of Public Health contacted Ledge Light to indicate that the establishments within that area should be closed until an adequate water sample is received. The water sample takes 24 hours, so the results won't be available until 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Mansfield said.
Establishments volunteered to close, with the health of customers in mind, Mansfield said. For establishments that were not yet open, Ledge Light left flyers stating that they had to remain closed until they got the OK from Ledge Light to open.
Mansfield said generally everyone understood that there is a public health concern and wanted to make sure the water is safe for drinking or cooking.
