Groton man charged in 'Molotov cocktail' incident, car fire

New London — A 25-year-old Groton man has been charged in connection with a “Molotov cocktail” incident and a suspicious car fire last month.

Police were called to the area of 50 Granite St. about 1:10 a.m. May 19 for reports that a "Molotov cocktail" was thrown toward the residence. Police found and seized two incendiary devices, according to a news release Tuesday. The structure was damaged but no one was injured. Police said they questioned a person of interest at the time and investigated.

Police said Ture Champion of 200 Michelle Lane, No. 207, Groton, was charged Tuesday with first-degree arson, first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree criminal mischief and two counts of manufacturing of bombs in that incident.

Police officers and firefighters responded at 1:41 a.m. May 31 to a vehicle that was fully engulfed in flames outside of 48 Granite St., which later was ruled to be a “suspicious car fire,” according to the release. No one was injured and the fire was extinguished.

Champion has been charged with third-degree arson, first-degree reckless endangerment and first-degree criminal mischief in the car fire.

He was being held in lieu of bonds that totaled $300,000, according to the release.

New London’s Collaborative Police/Fire Investigation Team; New London Police Department Investigative Services and Uniformed Divisions; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Groton Town police investigated both incidents, according to the release.
