Waterford residents urged to lock vehicles, remove valuables, keys and fobs

Waterford — Following the overnight thefts of several cars here earlier this week, town officials have taken to social media and robocalls to remind residents to lock their vehicles and remove all valuables, keys and key fobs from them.

First Selectman Rob Brule issued the reminder in robocalls Thursday night. Messages also have been posted on Facebook pages maintained by the town and the Waterford Police Department.

Three cars were stolen Tuesday night or Wednesday morning in the Shore Road area, according to police Chief Marc Balestracci, who said Friday two of the cars were recovered in the New Haven area while the third remains “outstanding.”

All three of the stolen cars were unlocked and had keys or key fobs in them, Balestracci said. Other unlocked cars showed signs of having been entered, he said.

Similar incidents were reported the same night in neighboring towns, Balestracci said.

“We have taken some steps to combat the problem, such as increasing patrols in certain areas and at certain times,” he said.

Balestracci urged residents not to engage anyone if they witness an attempted theft in progress and to call 911.
