Lleyton Hewitt returns a shot to Roger Federer during Sunday's final at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany. Hewitt won the title 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4.

    Hewitt upsets Federer

Lleyton Hewitt upset Roger Federer for the first time in 16 matches to win the Gerry Weber Open title Sunday at Halle, Germany, a warm-up tournament ahead of Wimbledon.

The 29-year-old Australian won 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 in his first final of the season. Hewitt last beat Federer in 2003.

"It's fantastic," Hewitt said. "Roger is a hell of an opponent and everybody knows how good he is on the grass court. His record speaks for itself."

Top-seeded Federer, who was chasing his sixth title in Halle, had won his previous 29 matches at Halle. It was Hewitt's first appearance at Germany's only grass-court tournament.

Federer said he remained confident ahead of Wimbledon, which starts June 21.

"I was unfortunate not to come through today, but the loss here does not worry me in any way," said Federer, the six-time Wimbledon champion. "I thought it was a good tournament for me. I have got to ensure I draw the right conclusions for Wimbledon."

    Sharapova loses to Li

Top-seeded Li Na beat Maria Sharapova 7-5, 6-1 to win the grass-court Aegon Classic at Birmingham, England, and claim her first title this year.

Sharapova lost to Li in the semifinals of last year's tournament and the Chinese player produced a repeat performance, winning her first title on grass. Second-seeded Sharapova won in Birmingham in 2004 - the year she won Wimbledon - and again in 2005.

    Querrey edges Fish

Sam Querrey won an all-American final at the Queen's Club grass-court tournament, edging Mardy Fish 7-6 (3), 7-5.

Querrey won his third title of the year, all on different surfaces - he won in Memphis on hardcourt and in Belgrade on clay.

The match was the first all-American final at Queen's since Todd Martin defeated Pete Sampras in 1994. Querrey is the eighth American winner of the Wimbledon warm-up tournament.
