    Baseball roundup

Everth Cabrera of the Padres and Diamondbacks third baseman Mark Reynolds, left, fight after Cabrera was caught off third base in the sixth inning of Sunday's game at San Diego. Cabrera, who had just tripled in the go-ahead run, was ejected.

    AMERICAN LEAGUE

    Twins, 7, White Sox 6

Delmon Young hit a tying single and Michael Cuddyer raced home with the winning run on center fielder Alex Rios' throwing error, capping Minnesota's four-run ninth inning in a victory over Chicago Sunday.

The Twins won three of four in the series to move within 1 1-2 games of the first-place White Sox.

With Chicago's Bobby Jenks (1-2) on the mound, Orlando Hudson walked in a 10-pitch at-bat and Joe Mauer walked on four straight pitches. Jason Kubel and Cuddyer hit consecutive RBI singles, cutting it to 6-5 and ending Jenks' day.

Sergio Santos walked Jason Repko to load the bases before Young hit a single to right-center. Rios' throw to the infield rolled to the White Sox dugout, allowing Cuddyer to score.

    Indians 7, Tigers 2

Jhonny Peralta's flyball sent Detroit's Ryan Rayburn crashing through a bullpen door for an inside-the-park homer, and Jeanmar Gomez won his major league debut as Cleveland beat the Tigers to complete a four-game sweep.

Gomez (1-0), called up from Triple-A Columbus to make a spot start, allowed two unearned runs over seven innings.

The right-hander was staked to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Peralta legged out his seventh homer of the season.

    Blue Jays 10, Orioles 1

Yunel Escobar hit his first career grand slam during a six-run second inning, and Toronto to a three-game sweep.

Playing his third game with the Blue Jays since being traded by the Atlanta Braves, Escobar tied a career high with five RBIs and got three hits to increase his batting average with Toronto to .462. He hit .238 with no homers in 75 games with Atlanta.

Escobar's shot off rookie Brian Matusz (3-10) stretched Toronto's major league-leading home run total to 140.

    Athletics 9, Royals 6

Adam Rosales, Kevin Kouzmanoff and Jack Cust each went deep, and Vin Mazzaro pitched into the eighth inning to help the Oakland finish a three-game sweep.

The A's have won five straight and 12 of 18 to even their record at 46-46, the first time they have been at .500 since June 15. The Royals have lost six straight, one shy of their longest losing streak this season.

Mazzaro (5-2) limited the Royals to seven hits - all singles - in a career-high 7 2-3 innings.

    Mariners 2, Angels 1

Jose Lopez hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the 10th inning, helping the Seattle snap an eight-game losing streak to Angels.

Ichiro Suzuki drew a leadoff walk from Kevin Jepsen (2-2) and advanced on Chone Figgins' sacrifice bunt. He then was caught in a rundown on a Franklin Gutierrez's grounder to shortstop. Gutierrez stole second and scored when Lopez lined a 2-1 pitch to left field.

Brandon League (6-6) worked 1 1-3 scoreless innings for the victory after replacing starter Jason Vargas, and David Aardsma got three outs for his 17th save in 21 attempts. He ended it by striking out Erick Aybar and Howie Kendrick with runners at first and second.

    NATIONAL LEAGUE

    Rockies 1, Reds 0

Chris Iannetta homered off left-hander Travis Wood, who was coming off a nearly perfect performance, and Aaron Cook got a breakthrough win on the road in Colorado's victory over Cincinnati.

Two of the NL's top offenses had trouble on a hot, breezy afternoon.

Iannetta connected in the sixth, one of only three hits off Wood (0-1), the rookie who allowed only one hit over nine innings his last time out but got no decision.

Colorado salvaged the final game of the series behind Cook (4-5), who had been one of only four full-time NL starters without a road win this season. He'd been 0-5 away from Coors Field.

    Cubs 11, Phillies 6

Roy Halladay hit Marlon Byrd twice and gave up two-run homers to Geovany Soto and Alfonso Soriano after each plunking, sending Chicago to a victory over Philadelphia.

Byrd became the first Cubs player in 105 years to be hit by a pitch 16 times in a season and Chicago took advantage of a rare wild night for Halladay, winning three of four in its first series since the All-Star break.

Halladay had tossed 18 consecutive scoreless innings before Chicago's four-run second, which began with Byrd getting nailed. Soto hit a two-run homer with one out and the Cubs added two more.

A similar scenario played out in the sixth, only this time it was Soriano hitting a two-run shot to left for his 17th homer.

    Padres 6, D'backs 4

Chris Denorfia homered twice and had four hits, and Everth Cabrera tripled in the go-ahead run moments before being ejected for a tussle with Mark Reynolds.

Both of Denorfia's home runs were solo shots, and his four hits matched a career high.

    Pirates 9, Astros 0

Paul Maholm pitched a three-hitter for his second career shutout and the Pirates established a season high for hits for the second consecutive game.

Maholm (6-7) faced only two batters above the minimum in needing 103 pitches to throw his first shutout since April 24, 2007, against Houston.

Garrett Jones hit a two-run shot, the Pirates' first multiple-run homer in five weeks, and Ronny Cedeno went 4 for 4 with three doubles. The Pirates had 19 hits a day after amassing 17.

    Cardinals 5, Dodgers 4

Matt Holliday drove in the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning, and the Cardinals rallied from a four-run deficit to finish a four-game sweep.

Allen Craig filled in for Albert Pujols, who got the day off for just the second time this season, and drove in three runs in the final two innings on his 26th birthday.

Jonathan Broxton (3-1) served up the pitch in the ninth inning that Holliday hit over Andre Ethier's head in right field, bringing home Jon Jay with the winning run.

    Braves 11, Brewers 6

Brian McCann hit a grand slam and matched his career high with five RBIs, helping the Braves end a rare two-game home losing streak.

Matt Diaz drove in three runs with three hits, including a homer, and Derek Lowe (10-8) went 5 1-3 innings as the Braves took a split in the four-game series.

Rickie Weeks had two homers and Fielder hit his second in as many days for Milwaukee, while Manny Parra (3-7) gave up 10 hits and 10 runs in only 5 1-3 innings.

    Marlins 1, Nationals 0

Alex Sanabia pitched into the sixth inning to earn his first major league win, and four relievers helped the Marlins shut out the Nationals for the second game in a row.

The Nationals went 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position for the second consecutive game.
