Penguins 4, Islanders 3 (OT)

After two terrific periods, the Islanders abandoned their strong fundamental play in the third.

And in a flash, their 10-game winning streak was over.

Bryan Rust scored his second goal of the game in overtime and Pittsburgh rallied past the Islanders on Thursday night in Brooklyn.

Pittsburgh erased a three-goal deficit in the third period and snapped its three-game skid. Jared McCann had a goal and two assists, and Evgeni Malkin also scored for the Penguins. Matt Murray made 20 saves.

"These are definitely character-building wins," Rust said. "For us as a team, that just kind of breeds confidence throughout the lineup."

Casey Cizikas, Cal Clutterbuck and Adam Pelech scored for New York. Semyon Varlamov stopped 35 shots.

Rust, who extended his point streak to five games, took the puck from Islanders center Brock Nelson behind the net and scored on a wraparound 3:25 into the extra session.

"Rusty is playing with a hunger and you can see it in his game," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. "His speed is so evident, and he is hard to play against because he can track pucks down, strip defenseman from behind and that's what he brings to this team. He has the ability to score. He is finishing for us, but his second effort for us is impressive."

McCann ended Varlamov's shutout bid when his wrist shot got by the goalie 1:38 into the third to spark the Penguins' comeback. Pittsburgh defensemen John Marino and Brian Dumoulin helped set up the play.

Rust and Malkin followed up McCann's goal with scores of their own as the Penguins wiped out their three-goal deficit in 7:10.

McCann, Malkin and Rust combined for seven points.

"It was obviously a good line for us," Sullivan said. "They were dynamic in the third period. There is a lot of speed on the wings there. I thought we got to the net in the third period better than the first two."

Rust snapped a wrist shot over Varlamov's glove after Murray made a sprawling save on Anthony Beauvillier's backhand at the other end. McCann and Malkin assisted on the goal.

"That save he made, that changes the outcome of the game," Sullivan said. "That's the timely save we need to win games."

Malkin tied it 3-all at 8:48 when he swatted home a long rebound. It was his second goal of the season in five games. Juuso Riikola and McCann assisted.

"We just have to be better. That's not the way we have been playing," Islanders captain Anders Lee said. "We all know that — that's what is frustrating. . Bad period, bad lapse. It cost us a point in the end against a really good team."

Cizikas opened the scoring when he sneaked a backhand past Murray just 19 seconds into the game. Michael Dal Colle deflected the puck behind the net, and Cizikas beat a confused Murray to the far post. Dal Colle and Ryan Pulock got assists.

Clutterbuck scored short-handed for the second straight game at 6:28 of the second period when his wrist shot whizzed between Murray's pads to give New York a 2-0 advantage. The Islanders have killed off 24 of 25 penalties over the past eight games.

Pelech stepped into a slap shot at 9:26 of the second to make it 3-0. The original shot was deflected by Penguins forward Teddy Blueger while Lee provided a screen at the top of the crease. Lee and Mathew Barzal assisted.

"Don't give teams a lead like three, two goals. It's not fun," Malkin said. "Coach starts changing lines, Coach starts changing the power play — it's not our game. I hope next game we will play better for the first half of the game."

Pittsburgh played without defenseman Kris Letang, who sustained a lower-body injury in the third period of a 6-4 loss at Boston on Monday.

Sharks 6, Wild 5

Logan Couture had a goal and three assists, Evander Kane scored his team-leading 10th of the season and San Jose held off Minnesota.

Tomas Hertl added a goal and two assists for the Sharks in their second consecutive win after dropping five straight and seven of eight.

Eric Staal had a goal and two assists for the Wild, who lost for the fourth time in five games.

Minnesota trailed 6-2 midway through the third period before scoring three straight goals — the first two in a span of 74 seconds. Brad Hunt got his fifth goal and Ryan Donato his first for the Wild. Justin Zucker's fifth with 4:35 left cut it to 6-5.

Sharks goalie Martin Jones made 21 saves, highlighted by a terrific stop of a potential tying goal with just under 2:30 left, when he got his pad on Zach Parise's shot in front.

Timo Meier, Marcus Sorensen and Radim Simek also scored for the Sharks, who led 4-0 after the first.

Luke Kunin had a goal for the Wild. Devan Dubnyk made 17 saves in the final two periods after replacing Alex Stalock.

Avalanche 9, Predators 4

Joonas Donskoi scored his first career hat trick and Colorado used a six-goal second period to rout Nashville.

Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and three assists before sitting out the third with an upper-body injury. Cale Makar and Ryan Graves each added a goal and two assists, and Matt Nieto, Matt Calvert Andre Burakovsky also scored.

Ryan Ellis, Filip Forsberg, Matt Duchene and Craig Smith scored for Nashville.

Capitals 5, Panthers 4 (OT)

Tom Wilson scored twice, the second 17 seconds into overtime to lift Washington past Florida for its fifth consecutive victory.

Alex Ovechkin also scored twice and added an assist, John Carlson had a goal and Braden Holtby stopped 32 shots. The Capitals have won nine of 10 and are 8-1-1 on the road this season.

Aleksander Barkov. Evgenii Dadonov, Brett Connolly and Frank Vatrano scored for Florida.

Flyers 3, Canadiens 2 (OT)

Sean Couturier flipped a shot from the slot that trickled past a surprised Carey Price just 55 seconds into overtime to lift Philadelphia past Montreal.

Phil Myers and James van Riemsdyk also scored, and Carter Hart stopped 22 shots.

Ben Chiarot and Shea Weber scored for Montreal. Price made 40 saves and was the first star of the game in a losing effort.

Maple Leafs 2, Golden Knights 1 (OT)

John Tavares scored at 2:33 of overtime to push Toronto past Vegas.

Playing his second game after missing seven with a broken finger, Tavares took a pass from Mitch Marner on a 2-on-1 and scored his fourth goal of the season, beating goalie Malcolm Subban with a high shot.

Auston Matthews also scored and Frederik Andersen made 37 saves to help Toronto win its third straight game. Max Pacioretty scored for Vegas. Subban made 35 saves in his first NHL start in his hometown.

Senators 3, Kings 2 (OT)

Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored 3:12 into overtime in Ottawa's victory over Los Angeles.

After Tyler Toffoli tied it for Los Angeles with 8 seconds left in regulation, Pageau scored off his own rebound for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Anthony Duclair and Artem Anisimov also scored for Ottawa, and Anders Nilsson made 30 saves. Dustin Brown also scored for the Kings, and Jack Campbell made 25 saves.

Blue Jackets 3, Coyotes 2

Gustav Nyquist had a goal and two assists, Joonas Korpisalo stopped 31 shots and Columbus beat Arizona to end a five-game losing streak.

Emil Bemstrom got his first NHL goal and Oliver Bjorkstrand scored midway through the third period after a bouncing puck skipped past Arizona defenseman Kyle Capobianco's stick.

Carl Soderberg and Jakob Chychrun scored for the Coyotes.

Flames 5, Devils 2

Noah Hanifin had a goal and two assists and Calgary scored four times in the second period to beat New Jersey.

Hanifin completed his first three-point game with Calgary and the fourth of his career.

Derek Ryan, Mikael Backlund, Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau also scored, and David Rittich made 21 saves. Jack Hughes and Nikita Gusev scored for New Jersey.

Blackhawks 5, Canucks 2

Patrick Kane had a power-play goal and two assists and Corey Crawford made 36 saves in Chicago's victory over Vancouver.

Alex DeBrincat and Andrew Shaw scored in the first period and David Kampf and Brandon Saad added empty-netters. J.T. Miller and Jake Virtanen scored for the Canucks.
