Sun’s Hartley to miss rest of season due to ACL injury

Mohegan — Bria Hartley and the Connecticut Sun cannot catch a break.

The Sun announced Wednesday that Hartley will miss the remainder of the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee during the third quarter of Sunday’s game at the Minnesota Lynx.

Hartley, a former UConn standout, tore the ACL in her right knee on August 28, 2020.

“It’s terrible,” Sun guard Courtney Williams said. “She worked so hard to get back (from her previous knee injury).”

Hartley just signed with Connecticut on July 18 to improve its depth at point guard. Jasmine Thomas began the year as the starter for the eighth straight season but tore the ACL in her right knee just five games into the season against the Indiana Fever on May 22.

Sun veteran Natisha Hiedeman took over as the starter and rookie Nia Clouden had been the lone backup before Hartley was signed. Alyssa Thomas, a forward, is more than capable of running the point, though.

Connecticut signed guard Kiana Williams to a seven-day contract on Wednesday to give it 10 healthy players.

Williams, 5-foot-8, was drafted 18th overall (second round) in 2021 by the Seattle Storm. She played 10 games with them before being waived in late June. They signed her to a hardship contract this past May and she played three games before being cut again.

Williams helped Stanford win the 2021 national championship. She’s the program leader in career three-point field goals (310).

    Jonquel easing her way back

    • Sun post Jonquel Jones continues to work herself back into shape after missing all three of the team’s games last week due to COVID-19.

Jones, the 2021 WNBA MVP, played 15 minutes off the bench during Sunday’s win at the Minnesota Lynx as Connecticut eased her back. She had eight points and four rebounds.

“It was terrible,” Jones said about having COVID. “I was really tired. The body was hurting. My head was hurting. It was just definitely a different experience. … It was kind of like the flu but the only thing that was different was the headache just wouldn’t go away. Like the headache was just kind of persistent and once that went away, I started to feel better.

    “I feel good now.”

    And more

    • The Sun surprised Amy Scheer, the team’s vice president of business operations, with a brief celebration and cake following Wednesday’s practice. She’s leaving the franchise to take a job with the National Football League. Scheer joined Connecticut in 2021. ... Connecticut and the WNBA are showing support for Brittney Griner by accepting donations for BG’s Heart and Sole Shoe Drive. Fans may donate new or gently worn shoes as well as necessities for unhoused people, such as toiletry products, at the Sun’s next three home games. They host the Chicago Sky on Sunday and the Phoenix Mercury on Aug. 2 and 4. Connecticut will also hold a 50-50 raffle.
