Creating an accent wall without paint

An accent wall is a popular way to draw attention to one end of a room. It's a striking way to break up a set of monochrome walls or highlight an interesting feature.

Accent walls are commonly created with paint. But if you aren't too handy with a brush or simply want to try something different, you can make an accent wall with other materials as well.

Wallpaper can make a splash when used to create an interesting pattern on a single wall. Jennifer Ott, writing for the home design site Houzz, says wallpaper gives you endless choices for bold patterns that would be difficult or impossible to paint.

Large prints can be custom fitted to the wall to make a striking display. The home improvement professional Bob Vila says the wall can be transformed into an artistic portrait or mural. Enlarged maps have also proven to be popular.

Some imagery can transform a wall and be removed when you plan to sell the property or simply need a change of scenery. These options might include a collage of magazine covers, photographs, book pages, or other interesting items.

You don't need to cover the entire wall to make it one of the most interesting parts of the room. Ott says you can create a gallery wall of multiple pieces or hang a single large painting. Enlarged photos can also work well.

Textiles and fabrics can lend the wall an interesting, textured appearance. Leah French, writing for the home design site The Spruce, says liquid starch can be used to hang fabrics and easily remove them if need be. Curtains, quilts, and tapestries also make eye-catching features.

Instead of paint, you can cover the accent wall with a different material. Becky Harris, also writing for Houzz, says some options include decorative moldings, stone, bookcases, or grass cloth. For homeowners who are looking for a rustic atmosphere, reclaimed wood works especially well.

Tiles offer a great deal of customization. Some possibilities include ornate ceiling tiles or geometric shapes that turn a wall into a three-dimensional vista.

Clustering a group of items together on the wall can easily make it a focal point. Ott says lighting fixtures or a collection of plants mounted against a wall will draw attention.
